Fast Draft Challenge

Candy Havens is holding another Fast Draft Challenge. The official starting date was yesterday, Wednesday, January 30th, but it's not too late to join. Fast Draft is a writing challenge similar to NaNo or, as some of you may remember, the old Survivor Writer's group run by Donna Caubarreaux. The challenge is to write twenty pages a day for two weeks. At the end of the challenge, you should have 280 pages of a first draft. If that's a bit much for you, you can set your own goal. Whatever works for you.The point is to set a daily goal and stick to it. You can join one of the many sub-support groups, or form one of your own, or you can go it alone. The choice is up to you. A few weeks after the challenge, Candy holds the Revision Hell Class, where you revise and edit your Fast Draft creation. Candy will post guidelines and rules to the list for encouragement and to help you along. What I like about Candy is, she's a no nonsense kind a girl. She lets you know right off that she won't put up with any whining or excuses. She works full time, 50-60 hours a week, has a husband and two teenage sons, and still finds time to write, so you should, too. First Page Contest At Literary Agent Nathan Bransford's Blog

Well, I'll Be Darn...

Have you ever Googled your name? You should. I do every so often just to see what pops up. You'd be surprised by the things you'll find. I've heard some real horror stories from other's who find their name associated with all kinds of stuff. Thankfully, my name is mostly associated with blog and forum comments. Which brings me to this reason for this post... While Googling my name today, I found a post on Romance Bandits announcing me as the winner for their New Years Booty drawing! Woo-hoo! I don't remember entering this, I think if you left a comment on a post (don't know which one), your name was put in for the drawing. I think I won a Borders gift card, but I don't know for how much. Isn't that just the greatest? I think so. The announcement, which was for a New Years drawing, was posted on the 13th of this month, so, I'm not the only one lagging behind. :) Needless to say, I've already emailed my snail mail info to the contact person, and I'm ready to shop! Woo-hoo! Isn't Google great?

Need Help Finishing Your Ms? Check Out Endurance Writing

Endurance Writing: Where writing is more than just words on paper. The Idea: Get from A to Z of your draft with the least amount of pain and suffering possible! Like ripping off a Band-Aid. Zzz-zzip! Endurance Writing focuses more on the process of "getting it done," than the actual end product that comes out of the writing--your book. HOW E.W. I've Been Tagged!

Apparently I've been tagged by my friend Maria Zanninni (thanks Maria!) :) I've seen this done on other blogs, but this is the first time I've been hit, er, ah, tagged. LOL I'm to post six random things you didn't know about me. Okay, here goes...

• 1. I still love to play with Barbies - I don't actually play with them, but when my niece or granddaughter drag them out, I always have to pick them up, check out their outfits, see what kind of accessories, etc they have. When I was a kid, I had the biggest and best Barbie stuff on the block. I've never lost my love for them.
• 2. I hate the taste of beer - even though if/when I do drink alcohol, that's the only thing I'll drink! Guess I just kind of got used to it back in my "partying" days. LOL
• 3. I'm half Italian and half Irish - my maternal grandparents came here from Italy in 1906 and settled in Detroit.
• 4. I like to eat spaghetti for breakfast - I've always loved spaghetti, and when/if I have leftovers, I'll warm a bowl up and have it for breakfast - garlic toast and all!
• 5. I'm addicted to Warm Vanilla Sugar body lotion from Bath and Body Works - I wear it every day, and I replenish it many, many times throughout the day. It's an absolutely wonderful, addicting fragrance!
• 6. My first love was Elvis Presley! LOL - when I was a kid, pictures of Elvis plastered my bedroom wall. And I had an Elvis Club. You had to kiss Elvis' picture to be a member!

We all know very well the body language of a women who's interested in a man. The hair toss, crossing her legs, a dangling a shoe, a sideways glance. But what about men? What kind of body language indicates a man is interested in a woman? A guide to male body language Body language will always give you away. Learn how to spot the tell-tale signs of a man who's interested in you and you'll never be left guessing again! The Approach If a man is interested, as he approaches you he will pull in his tummy, puff up his chest and stand taller. Then the preening begins! Preening This will take the form of: Reaching for his throat and straightening his tie Smoothing his collar Brushing imaginary dust from his shoulder Rearranging his shirt, cufflinks or other clothing Smoothing his hair Key signs he's interested Hooking his thumbs in his belt.This highlights the genital region and says "I'm virile" (When used with other men this means they are staking their territory and showing that they're not afraid). Women are excellent at using the intimate gaze - men are not and often don't even pick up on it when they're on the receiving end of one. A man's intimate gaze is generally very obvious. The intimate gaze Look out for the eyes following the "triangular formation" - eye to eye - then down to the mouth and chin - down to the rest of the body- and back up to the eyes again in a triangular formation. Looking for work? Samhain Publishing is looking for content editors and final line editors.

At this time we are searching for motivated individuals interested in working part time (one to two releases a month) as an editor in all genres of romance and erotica. Preference for both positions is given to non-authors or to writers not actively seeking publication/pursuing a career in writing. Anyone accepting a position editing with us will not be eligible for future publication/submission to Samhain as an author.

Duties include but are not limited to reading and responding to submissions, contracting books, editing and finalizing manuscripts, communicating with authors, final line editors, other content editors and Samhain executives about various things such as cover art, excerpts, blurbs, promotion and more.

We are especially interested in finding editors who, once they’ve learned and been with the company for a period of time, would be interested in traveling and attending conferences/giving workshops and talks to RWA groups throughout the year as a representative of Samhain.

Compensation involves both monthly flat fees as well as royalty based pay on ebooks and print books. Residuals are paid on all of an editor’s backlist and pay is monthly.

New Forum - Historical Fiction Books

I heard through the grapevine that there's a new forum in town. The forum is Historical Fiction Books and it's for historical writer's and for anyone who loves historical fiction.

So, being that I am a HISTORICAL Western Romance Writer, I hopped on over and signed up. When I joined a couple of weeks ago, there was only a handful of members. Now it's about tripled (or Quadrupled). :)

• This network is for authors, publishers and readers of historical fiction books only. The books can be any genre of historical fiction - mystery, romance, paranormal, fantasy, time-travel, mainstream, western, etc.

Aussie Romance Author Anne Whitefield is the forum mom. She put the site together, and sent out invitations to various writer's lists and egroup's announcing the sites opening a few weeks ago (which is how I learned about it).

Historical Fiction Books is similar to most other social forums. You set up a profile, you get a private email box, a blog, join groups, add friends, add photos, post comments, etc., etc., etc. So, if you're interested, check it out. Oh, another little member perk is the cute little badge. Grab your code (which they provide with a photo of you, and a link to your page) right from your page and post it to your blog or website, or wherever.

New Magazine Accepting Short Story Submissions

Grassroots Publishing Co, Inc. has been a magazine publisher for over twenty- five years. They are in the process of putting together a new publication, Love Story Magazine. Its launch is planned for the end of 2008. At this time, they are accepting submissions from writers who specialize in short romance stories (2000-5000 words) for publication. Guess What?

I'm almost embarrassed to post this, but, here goes... In my inbox this morning was a notification from Kathy, of Kathy's Review Corner, saying my name was picked from her Contest and Announcement Yahoogroup Newsletter, and that I'd won an ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) of Linnea Sinclair's Games of Command. I'm floored. I cannot believe I have, once again, won something! This is crazy. I've won more things since April, than I've won my whole entire life! I said it before, and I'll say it again,. I am not a contest junkie - I swear! I read a LOT of blogs, and I sometimes enter my name when I run across a contest or drawing. That's it. Half the time when I receive a winner's notification, I don't know how, from where or what I won! Which was the case this morning. I actually emailed Kathy and asked her that very question -how I'd won Games of Command. She pointed me to her website, and then it all came back to me. I remembered visiting and signing up for her Announcements and Contests Newsletter. And I'm glad I did! When you first write?

When your writing is first praised?

When your writing is first published?

No self-definition can come from outside. You don't "become a writer" because others say that you have written well.

You become a writer when you tell yourself this is what you are.

If you have fundamental self-honesty, you will then write. You will carry out the activity you have linked with your deepest identity.

Your membership card as a writer is issued in the closet of your soul.

Today, I'll see what I think in the closet of my soul. I will make my declaration there.
