Deep POV Workshop by Laurie Sanders At Coffee Time Romance Forum

Black Velvet Seductions founder, CEO, and Editor Lau-rie Sanders will present a workshop on deep point of view at the Coffee Time Romance Forum during the month of August 2008. Mark your calendars now for this event. Laurie will cover:
  • What fiction readers want
  • Connecting the dots – how does deep point of view give readers a satisfying experience? How is the reader‘s experience different with shallow point of view versus a deep point of view?
  • How to decide whose point of view to use for key scenes, and how to make the best use of that viewpoint.
  • Deciding when and where and how to change point of view. Is changing viewpoint in the middle of a scene always bad?
  • Author invisibility -- avoiding author point of view.
  • Choosing details that deepen point of view
  • Infusing dialogue with point of view.
  • Point of view and character motivation – your char-acter has done a bad, bad thing – how can you use point of view to make the reader still root for him or her?

See ? for information.

I made a mistake on yesterdays workshop post. The Bookworm workshop was incorrect. Here is the correct workshop info. Sorry, folks. :) *Permission for forward, share or pass along. Then join me on the Marketing For Romance Writers loop to learn more! (Then stay for the great info!) This class is not limited to one particular “type” of romance or even romance at all. This one to two hour class will cover topics as: What is a goody bag and why should I spend my time making them? It’s not just a business card – or how to make your contribution stand outI have too many things to do already – how to find time to make your bags (or how to press your friends and family members into unpaid labor *grin*)Where to find bags and where to send them. Because it’s a loop chat, I’ll gladly answer questions afterwards in case our “time” runs out. So don’t worry about missing a thing! (And if you can't join me sign up anyway. It's a loop class so everything will be archived for you to read when you can!) A Couple of Free Workshops

On June 9th, the EroticRomanceWorkshop eloop and Sascha Illyvich will present WRITING FROM THE MALE POINT OF VIEW WORKSHOP. Here's the workshop info: WRITING FROM THE MALE POINT OF VIEW In this updated version, learn the ins and outs of character creation from a side of romance we rarely hear from, the male romance reader/writer! Paranormal Romance author Sascha Illyvich shares with us tips on how to create more memorable heroes, avoid some common pitfalls and have more fun with our writing! What you'll learn from this class • Male Archetypes and how they affect our characters • How (il)logical men think and why they act the way they do • How to take any male character from any movie/story and modify him to fit your story • How to get your man to express his true "self" • What men REALLY care about and how to work with that for your characters* • A man's self view* • The GAY MALE Viewpoint* • The Male Cycle of Emotions and how it compares to the female cycle of emotions • A man's journey in life • What men really think A few extras Using character creations sheets (don't groan!) that have all the relevant information you'll need, you'll be able to craft male characters that are just as deep as your female characters. Getting inside the heads of your male characters is the most important aspect of "how to write" them. Cross gender writing can make or break an author's career if they cannot portray the opposite gender clearly and accurately. With the growing popularity of M/M romances, it's becoming increasingly important for males to be portrayed in the proper light! We'll cover all that here and a lot more over the next week. This is a great workshop and will be really helpful, even if you don't write erotic romance. Membership is FREE. To sign up, go to the group homepage at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EroticRomanceWorkshop/ . Sascha Illyvich Website Also, check out Bookworm Bags on June 19th at 8:00 PM EST and attend a one-hour workshop on how to put together goody bags for conferences, book signings, giveaways, etc. Visit http://www.bookwormbags.com for more information. Happy Writing!

Need Help Finishing Your Ms? Check Out Endurance Writing

Endurance Writing: Where writing is more than just words on paper. The Idea: Get from A to Z of your draft with the least amount of pain and suffering possible! Like ripping off a Band-Aid. Zzz-zzip! Endurance Writing focuses more on the process of "getting it done," than the actual end product that comes out of the writing--your book. HOW E.W. WORKS: We all get together as a group in a Yahoo Messenger Conference Room and write as fast as we can ("sprint") for a set period of time (between 20 and 45 minutes, usually). Then we take a break (about 15 minutes), for fun discussion, chocolate, coffee, etc. Then we start all over with another sprint. We don't claim to be expert writers... much. In fact, we're not so much concerned with content or your overall page/word count as we are with getting you to participate in the writing sprints that will help you reach that light at the end of the tunnel: A FINISHED FIRST DRAFT! Endurance Writing is not about meeting a specific word count goal or page count goal. It is not about "checking in" with the group on your specific daily or weekly progress, or even about "finishing" any specific project. The ultimate goal is, of course, for participants to be able to finish multiple writing projects, but this should occur more as a natural side effect of participation in Endurance Writing, not as its specific aim. As a part of the Endurance Writing group, you can work on whatever project you desire during WordSprints. Old half-finished novel on the backburner for months? Go ahead and pick it up! Got an outline that's been dying for some attention? Perfect! Basically, if you can dream it, you can sprint with it. In addition, you can participate in whatever scheduled WordSprints you desire. No advance notice is necessary to "jump in" on a daily WordSprint with the group. What Endurance Writing is, essentially, is a wellspring of real-time, online writing camaraderie--as well as a system of time-wise writing accountability for those who find themselves easily distracted from the actual task of writing that draft. Endurance Writing is about putting in the time, in a group setting, making your fellow writers your "partners in crime." Broken up into bite-sized, 20-minute chunks, Endurance Writing takes the enormous, hard-shelled task of writing a novel and makes it more palatable... and sociable. Endurance Writer Site EW Yahoo Group Note: You'll need Yahoo Messenger to Participate

Interested In A Free Novel Writing Course?

Interested in a FREE 2 year Novel Writing Course? If so, you can read about it here. The two year long course is presented by Lazette Gifford and will take place on Holly Lisle's Forward Motion for Writers forum. Below is a snippet about the course I pinched from the forum. Happy Novel Writing!

Year One topics: Writing Basics: Ideas, Genres, Themes, Conflict and more Character development Worldbuilding Outlining Writing, including what to do when you get stuck Year Two topics: Completing your first draft The second draft Final edits Submission You might also consider buying the 2YN: Year 1 book, which is available in PDF (Download) format and which you can print out. This is the material that I'll present in the class, so it's not necessary that you have it. However, some people have found it helpful to have the book since they can look ahead and do the work in an order that is more natural to them, though they cannot post material before the class is presented on the boards. It is also helpful so you can do the work even if they are not able to get to the computer on days I put the material up. As always, there are no fees or special requirements, other than you be a member of Forward Motion. If you are interested, just post to this thread and I'll add you to the board when it's open.

Free Workshop Tomorrow - Fight Scenes or How Butts Get Kicked

Fight Scenes or How Butts Get Kicked Presented by Fiona Jade Tuesday, December 11, 2007 On The EroticRomanceWorkshop E-Loop With erotic romance spanning various genres, fight scenes– be its words, or fists or laser blasts - speed up the action on the pages.Like lovemaking, a fight scene presents similar challenges to the author – depicting simultaneous action in a sequence of phrases, pacing, verbiage, and, well, "punch". This workshop will present butt kicking and still feminine heroines, various ways to hurt a body (if you REALLY have to) and the little known fact rarely depicted on the silver screen - that when one punches something really hard, one's knuckles really hurt. Bio: Fiona Jayde is a pilot, a ninth degree black belt in three styles of martial arts, a computer hacker, a mountain climber, a jazz singer, a weight lifter, a super spy with a talent for languages, and an evil genius. All in her own head. In life, she is an author, insists she is a good driver even though various loved ones refuse to let her drive, possesses a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do and blue belt in Aikido, a web developer, scared to death of heights, loves jazz piano, can bench-press about 20 pounds-with effort, speaks English and Russian fluently, and when not plotting murder and mayhem enjoys steamy romance novels, sexy spy thrillers, murky mysteries and violent movies where things frequently blow up. Her latest series – Urban Myth, Urban Legend and Urban Fantasy is a trilogy of paranormal romances with humans and vampires highly skilled in the arts of combat fighting and training for peace amidst the races. You must be a registered member of the EroticRomanceWorkshop on Yahoogroups to participate. Click on the link above to join - it's FREE! *Reposted with permission from the EroticRomanceWorkshop group.
