Jessica Faust Doing Critiques At Romantic Times Online

I happened across this while looking around the Romantic Times online website and thought I'd share. Apparently, if you email the first three pages of your ms, Jessica Faust of Bookends will critique them. It says that members of the Western Pennsylvania Romance Writers RWA Chapter get first dibs, but it doesn't say if/when non-members can submit. So, being that they posted the email address, and said to send it in, that's what I did. :) Here's the link to the site: http://www.romantictimes.com/authors_tip.php?tip=994 Good luck!

THE ALL-IMPORTANT FIRST THREE PAGES

With a new year comes a new Pros on Prose column, which will offer criticism of aspiring writers' first three pages, as evaluated by industry professionals. We asked Jessica Faust, an agent with Bookends LLC, to read the opening manuscript and evaluate it with an eye toward submission. Because the 25th anniversary Romantic Times Booklovers Convention will be held in Pittsburgh in 2008, works by members of the Western Pennsylvania Romance Writers RWA chapter will be the first to be critiqued anonymously. If you'd like the first three pages of your work critiqued, e-mail faygie@romantictimes.com. Please include your name and the category of your story.

Bookends Contest #3 - Erotic Romance

Bookends has moved on to the next contest! Phew, they're moving fast! Here are the rules (I snipped them from the blog): TODAY IS THE EROTIC ROMANCE CONTEST! We're accepting all types of erotic romance, including contemporary, historical, and paranormal. ***PLEASE NOTE THAT SOME OF THESE ENTRIES MAY DESCRIBE GRAPHIC SEX SCENES. WE KNOW THIS KIND OF MATERIAL ISN’T FOR EVERYBODY. IF YOU FIND THIS TYPE OF WRITING PERSONALLY OFFENSIVE, THEN PLEASE REFRAIN FROM READING THE COMMENTS SECTION.*** Here are the rules: 1. We’ll only accept entries that are posted in the comments section of this blog article. No e-mailed entries will be considered. 2. Include your title and the first 100 words of your book. Now, we’re not saying to leave us hanging mid-sentence here. Stop wherever the previous sentence ends, but do not exceed 100 words. 3. The same work cannot be entered in more than one genre. If you think your book straddles more than one genre, you’ll have to pick one. We will, however, accept multiple works from the same author in the same or different categories. 4. Once the material is entered, it’s your final entry. We won’t allow revised versions of the same work. 5. We’re accepting excerpts of both finished and unfinished works. 6. The deadline is tomorrow, February 26th, at 9:00 a.m. EST. And in case you’ve forgotten, the prize is a critique of the query letter, synopsis, and first chapter of the winning entry! The winner will e-mail us the additional material and we’ll provide our notes privately, not on the blog. We will, however, discuss what we liked about each winning 100-word entry on the blog, and will pull out a few honorable mentions to highlight other excerpts that came close and why. We’ll post the winners in a few days and then move on to the next genre. But this time we’ll make it a surprise, just to keep you on your toes! Good Luck!

Samhain Open For Submissions

I just found out that as of February 5th, Samhain is once again open for general submissions. This might be old news to some of you, but not for me. Just thought I'd share. :) Happy Writing! General Submissions Samhain Publishing is now open to general submissions of all genres of romance and erotica, as well as fantasy, urban fantasy and science fiction with strong romantic elements. We are refocusing our efforts and will no longer be accepting submissions in other genres for the time being. All submissions must be new material to be considered for publication, no reprints. Once you’ve had a new work accepted by Samhain, you are free to submit previously published works to your editor for consideration. Only one manuscript at a time per author please! And, if the manuscript is being offered elsewhere simultaneously, please keep us informed of its status. We encourage you to let your muse have its way and to create tales that don’t always adhere to current trends. One never knows what the next “hot genre” will be or when it will start, so write what’s in your soul. These are the books that, whether the story is based on “formula” or is an “original”, when written from the heart will earn you a life-time readership. The preferred word count is 60,000 or longer, but we are quite happy to publish shorter works with word counts of no less than 12,000. Any book that glorifies depraved or illegal acts will not be considered. No pedophilia, bestiality, racial intolerance, rape as titillation, necrophilia – no ick factors, please! For more information on Samhain and how to submit your book, follow the links! Royalty and Contracts How to Submit Consider joining us! Samhain Publishing, Ltd. an author-friendly publishing house whose fundamental belief is that the world is a better place when there are good books to read. Thank you! Samhain Publishing, Ltd. Open Call For Submissions For Aspen Mountain Press Del Fantasma Line

Open submisson calls at Aspen Mountain Press for their Del Fantasma line. I snipped this from an email sent to one of my writing loops:
We are having an open submissions call for our Del Fantasma line…we like them hot, and we like to mix up the stories with heterosexual, homosexual couples and ménage situations…at least one of the couple should have some paranormal aspect to them if at all possible. We've had a few where the featured couple weren't at least half paranormal and they haven't done as well as the stories where at least one is a shapeshifter or other worldly character of some sort. All stories must have a scene at the bar with Cody Warren, but that is further explained in the series bible which is attached. We are only offering contracts on completed stories, and we'd like them to be about 15-30k ideally. Sandra www.AspenMountainPress.com Adventure, Mystery, Passion
Overview Del Fantasma is Aspen Mountain Press’ paranormal romance series that is focused around the Del Fantasma bar in Vista Loma, California and the bar owner, vampire Cody Warren. Cody is said to have a story behind every drink he serves and each story must be titled after a real bar drink that somehow relates to the story (eg Del Fantasma: Texas Tea). No drinks may be repeated. The author’s main characters must meet or be reunited at the bar and Cody must appear in at least one scene. If you can have Cody be the one that introduces them or be the one that throws them together in some situation, so much the better. Additional details are in the sections below. Requirements - Genre Del Fantasma series stories are required to be contemporary paranormal romances. They can be any heat level that conforms to other requirements and any sexual orientation (m/f, GLBT, ménage, etc.). Very sexy/sensual is the focus. Aspen Mountain Press’ standard disqualifications still apply. No pedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality, snuff, scat/golden showers or rape/incest. For more information on these, please see Aspen Mountain Press’ general submissions page at http://www.aspenmountainpress.com/submissions/info_6.html. Note that stories submitted for the Del Fantasma series must be NEW stories. Word Count The word count for this series is 5k to 100k. Although 5k is an absolute minimum, authors are encouraged to try for a minimum of at least 15K to provide the readers with the best immersion. Format Books in the Del Fantasma Series are currently offered in ebook format only, with possibility of having them put into print anthologies in the future.

eHarlequin Looking for Submissions for New "Nocturne Bites"

Nocturne Bites Length: 10,000 - 15,000 words Editorial Director: Tara Gavin Associate Senior Editor: Ann Leslie Tuttle Assistant Editor: Sean MackiewiczSilhouette Nocturne is looking to acquire paranormal editorial with strong sexual, fantasy and danger elements for its new eBook program, Nocturne Bites. We're looking for fast-paced novellas that hook the reader early by establishing a paranormal world and its conflicts. We are looking for stories of vampires, shape-shifters, werewolves, psychic powers, etc. set in contemporary times. Many of the elements that make a successful Silhouette Nocturne remain true for Nocturne Bites. Stories should deliver a dark, highly sensual read that will entertain readers and take them from everyday life to an atmospheric, complex world filled with characters struggling with life and death issues. A strong alpha hero is of the utmost importantance. While action-packed and mission-oriented, the scope of these stories should be more contained, with more focus turned to character development. All stories should be capable of standing alone; all loose ends need to betied up, and the relationship between hero and heroine should resolve itself in a satisfying manner. For published authors, this line is a great way to build their miniseries at Harlequin and Silhouette. Unpublished authors are welcome as well. Only complete manuscripts submitted electronically will be considered from unpublished authors; no partials or queries, please. Submissions should be sent as a Word-compatible attachment. Submissions should also follow standard formatting guidelines legible font on numbered pages. Author name and title should appear as a header or footer on each page. Lots of Upcoming Contests at Bookends

Starting TODAY, Bookends will be judging a whole series of contests on their blog. Here's a bit of information about the contest I snipped from their blog post: We’re launching a new contest today, and this one is going to be something a little different. We’ll actually be judging a whole series of contests. We decided to try several genre-specific competitions of the first 100 words of the work. We’ll be limiting the types of books to the areas that we represent. In the next few months we’ll be holding contests in the following genres:
  • Mystery (traditional and cozy)
  • Paranormal Romance/Romance With Fantasy Elements
  • Erotic Romance
  • Women’s Fiction
  • Romantic Suspense
  • Contemporary Romance
  • Thriller/Suspense
  • Historical Romance

The rules are as follows:

  • 1. We’ll only accept entries that are posted in the comments section of this blog article. No e-mailed entries will be considered.
  • 2. Include your title and the first 100 words of your book. Now, we’re not saying to leave us hanging mid-sentence here. Stop wherever the previous sentence ends, but do not exceed 100 words.
  • 3. The same work cannot be entered in more than one genre. If you think your book straddles more than one genre, you’ll have to pick one. We will, however, accept multiple works from the same author in different categories.
  • 4. Once the material is entered, it’s your final entry. We won’t allow revised versions of the same work.
  • 5. The deadline is tomorrow, February 15th, at 9:00 a.m. EST.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting my query letter, synopsis and first 100 words in order!

On another note, the Bookends Pitch Critique has ended. On Tuesdays Bookends post, Jessica finally said she'd had enough. And who can blame her? I know she had to have critiqued at least 200 or more pitches. However, I'm sorry to say, she didn't get to mine. When she decided to stop, my entry was 15 away from her last critique. Oh well, maybe I'll have better luck with the 100 word contest. I'm waiting for the Historical Romance category. I'm just glad they didn't start the contest off with my category, because this contest came as a huge surprise. Not even a hint that they would be doing this. :)

So, I'm off to get my submission ready. You never know, they just might decide to take submissions for the Historical Romance Category tomorrow. If so, I want to be ready. :)

Wish me luck!
